Pancha Maha Yajna Model: 7 Yajna Model

Taittiriya Upanishad II.2-5 (c. 2500-1500 BCE)

A modern version of the Yajna model adapted by Robert Birnberg; which depicts the relationships between the individual and key aspects of his / her environment.

MAHA : great YAJNA : duty, offering, that which serves

The seven yajnas are relationships that support and sustain the individual like legs of a table. A deficiency in one area will tax the others. Therefore the aim is to continually cultivate better relationships in all seven yajnas.

Please go through each of the seven aspects of the model and rate the level of happiness on a scale of 0-10, with 10 being the highest.

1. Family (includes all familial relations, parents, siblings, offsprings, extended family, etc.)

2. Friends (individuals with whom we choose to share our mutual time, energy, and interests)

3. Community (distinct from friends, community are groups of people we may not know individually. It could be meet up groups, volunteering groups, gyms, yoga studios, churches, synagogues, temples, etc. The need for community is deep-seated, based on the dual nature of humanity.)

4. Nature (in the great outdoors, we can ground our energy and connect to something bigger.)

5. Partner/Person/Being (all humans need regular, close contact with another person or being, it could be a pet.)

6. Personal Routines (a habit made conscious. Deliberate actions that enrich our daily lives.)

7. Teacher (all cultures offer elders, healers, leaders, teachers, mentors, coaches, therapists, and other guides to help the individual navigate through life's many challenges. Yoga itself is based on a student teacher model.)
